The Morning Grind
HAAAAAAAATE IT. Just hate it. When you're about to turn onto the main road of your commute and you juuuuuust miss that great window of opportunity where you could have been the only one on the road, coasting along at a nice, safe, speedy clip, facilitating an early (or, at the very least, on-time) arrival at your destination...free of stress, anxiety, and road rage...
But, no. You miss the window and now have to wait for a line of cars, 20 strong, all driven by low-riding blue-haired grannies who'd rather kill their own precious grandchildren than dare press their damned, discolored, orthopaedic shoes down on that FREAKIN' GAS PEDAL any harder!! WHY??? Why won't you drive faster, Ethel???? Does it make your dentures vibrate uncomfortably??? ARE YOU AFRAID YOU MIGHT, IN THE UNTHINKABLE SCENARIO IN WHICH YOU ACTUALLY HIT 27 MPH, CAREEN OFF THE ROAD INTO AN ERRANT DITCH WHERE YOUR CAR WILL BURST INTO FLAMES, IGNITING BOTH YOUR CURLER-LADEN MOP AND FLUORESCENT, BIRD-PATTERNED MUUMUU?? WHY??!?!!!
As you may have guessed, I missed my window this morning. I started thinking of all the external forces that resulted in my morning commute being so abruptly halted--naturally, I couldn't have caused such a disturbance. The list was pretty impressive: I killed 17 seconds cleaning up a small spilth of milk because of a defective container (thanks, CostCo); burnt another 11 seconds taking care of a spider that, if left unchecked, would have undoubtedly multiplied throughout the day, devouring the house and everyone inside; wasted 7 extra seconds locking the front door (I just don't see the necessity when other people are home and you don't live in the projects...but rules are rules)--the list went on. After totalling everything up, I figured out that, had I not had to devote all of those precious seconds on menial tasks, I could have easily avoided the missed-window situation entirely. Which made me even more roadrageous (new word, write it down).
I will say, though...commute-related frustrations, aside...it was pretty cool to look up into the sky this morning and see this:
Happy Friday, everyone :)

Facebook is for Lovers
Received this email earlier today...I knew my years of cultivating an interesting and alluring Facebook profile would eventually pay off. Katherine and I are going to be so happy together. I mean, she "needs to belong to one man in the deep blue sea of love??" We're PERFECT for each other! I'm willing to look past the poor grammar and spelling errors as this is obviously a love story in the making...

Hi There,
My name is Katherine I would like to get to know you better.I got your email from your facebook page cause sometimes life gets so weird and strange that u cant imagine, u may even get so moved and motivated cause what u see. I think there are many ways to prevent the eyes but there are many things to see. how i wish to know you more and personally cause u are so thrilling. I believe something good will come out of it. Let me know your feelings so that we can get to know each other very well. I am a romantic woman, loyal, sincere woman. My personality is quiet, stable, introspective, calm, honest. My dream to have a loving family. I am willing to travel across any sea to find true love. I need to belong to one man in the deep blue sea of love I am loving and caring. A friend was saying, that an ideal woman should be "like a chef in the kitchen, a woman in the society, and loving in bed". I agree. I try that my glamor and femininity should reflect around my home in the street in the society. My life is happy, but the missing ingredient is the sharing of love with a true life's partner. I am seeking a male who above all is emotionally secure, self-confident, objective, fair, comfortable with who they are, their body, and still have dreams to achieve. I love men who are professional, assertive, goal oriented and self-directed. I respond very well to men who are socially and culturally aware and interested in the important issues of our day. I also enjoy being in the company of men who are excited about what they do for a living as well as just for fun.Am not bothered with the age difference cos i believe in who you really are from the inside, I am interested in connecting with a man who can commit to growing a one on one relationship, in which leaving is not an option and being unhappy is unacceptable.
till i hear from you.
Yours,
Katherine

There and back again...
For my fellow Tolkienophiles out there, who take pride in wallowing with me in extreme Hobbit-dorkdom, here are the first two Hobbit movie production vlogs. Of course, the movies already look incredible. Notice, in the second vid, how Andy Serkis is looking more and more like PJ--I guess they share the same non-barber ;) (MUCH LOVE, FELLAS!!)

Mixed Bag
Things that have annoyed me so far today:
Things that have made me smile today:
REDSKINS TOASTER!
- Remembering I said the word "acculturate" two days ago and really meant "acclimate..." but correcting it at this point would be worthless.
- Forgetting to leave my sunglasses in the car and bringing them into work with me.
- Getting stuck behind a dude riding a Vespa without a helmet...not just because he was driving painstakingly slow--which he was--but because he wasn't wearing a helmet. C'mon, guy, really? Gonna mess up your buzz cut? Or just worried about not looking cool while riding 10 mph under the speed limit on a scooter in residential area?

Freedom!!!!!!
Happy 4th of July, everyone! On this day, during which we celebrate our country declaring itself an independent nation with beer and fireworks displays, please remember what our forefathers said as they gathered together to mark this momentous occasion:
DON'T LIGHT YOUR HOUSE ON FIRE, YOU DRUNKEN MORONS!
May your celebrations be bar-b-quey :D

Date Night with Raj
Learned an important lesson this morning: Do not...I repeat...do NOT eat extra spicy Phaal in close proximity to bedtime. The fallout is not very pleasant. The brunt of my productivity today has been conducted in a men's room stall. Also, last night, I think I dreamt that my face had a face.
Went to Saagar Indian Cuisine last night. Was supposed to be a bit of a date night for the ladyfren' and me...had a Groupon and everything, so, ya know, pretty romantic. We arrived eager and excited and walked in to find a practically empty room; there were four people eating, one of whom had his leg up on his booth seat, his shoeless foot extending just past the end of the cushion. Class.
Naturally, the multi-tasking waiter/busboy/maitre'd--who was seemingly overwhelmed by the four people silently eating around him--sat us in the booth next to Foot Guy. It was at this point we learned that Foot Guy's name was Raj and he was the money behind the restaurant. Also, Raj was DRUNK. He was quite happy at the fact we were sitting nearby and began chatting us up immediately, informing us he'd had a bottle of Scotch prior to his, now, second large bottle of Taj lager, and that we shouldn't worry about paying for our drinks because they'd be on him. When I told him I wasn't planning on drinking too much more as I had to drive later, he suggested we leave our car at the restaurant and he'd be happy to take us home after our meal. This, obviously, was tremendously comforting.
Started with a shared plate of Aloo Tikki Chaat (potato patties in a chick pea curry with yogurt, mint, tamarind sauce and spices). The Wife had Malai Kofta (veggie-cheese dumplings in a cream sauce with spices). I was going to select my Indian cuisine go-to, Palak Paneer...but then I saw the Phaal. I'd never had Phaal before, but it was the accompanying disclaimer that caught my eye: (this is word-for-word from the menu)
Um...YES?! I love spicy food and, even more, I love a challenge. Ordered the Phaal and told him not to hold back.
The meal progressed. Raj continued to drink. I began to sweat profusely, my insides burning away with every successive forkful of Phaal. Raj, who was now joined by Shankar, the owner of the restaurant, was beckoning us to join him at his table and eat from the four plates of food they'd ordered. The perfect date night.
(Btw, at some point during the meal, like a flash flood, a party of no less than 40 people came into the restaurant, got food, ate, and left within 20 minutes. It was one of those moments where, afterwards, you look at the person next to you with a furrowed brow and go, "Did that just happen??")
Skip to the end of the meal. I'm covered in curry sweat, the Wife is slipping into the food coma, and Raj and Shankar--my two new best friends who, I'm now convinced, maintain positions of note in the local chapter of the Indian mafia--have told me I need to come back and see them sometime soon when I'm not driving so we can "go crazy." With multiple handshakes and words of mutual admiration, we finally part ways.
So, in sum, Date Night was comprised of:
-An empty restaurant with poor service
-Food that induced me into labor
-Forced conversation with an intoxicated Indian money-lender who may be tied to the mob
MISSION ACCOMPLISHED

THE MEAL:
| Top - Malai Kofta, Bottom - Phaal of Death |
Warning: Extremely Hot & Spicy. Think Before You Order. An excruciatingly hot curry, more pain and sweat than flavor, for our customers who do this on a dare, we will require you to state a verbal disclaimer not holding us liable for any physical or emotional damage after eating this curry. If you do manage to finish your serving of curry, a bottle of beer is on us.
